I thought I would start off Scottish Blends Week by tasting Scotland's best selling blended whisky. Vanilla, herbal with a not unpleasant bitterness akin to dandelion greens. A slight acid burn in the finish.

Johnnie Walker Gold Label The Centenary Blend 18 Years Old, 40% abv
Very light smoke, toasty notes, sweet and oaky incense on nose. Smooth mouthfeel with pleasant wee tang at outset. Some sweet and spicy grass notes. Dry finish.

Sweet old fruit aromas initially then dry solventy notes with incense wafting in and out on the nose. The mouthfeel is a bit rough, like fine sandpaper - but unpleasant, just a bit edgy. A simple dram.

Rich, warm fig compote aromas followed by hint of dry hay on the nose. Floral earthiness with a wee edge on the palate. A good mid afternoon dram.

Johnnie Walker Green Label 15 Years Old, 43% abv
Spring heather and grasses with some pleasant but bitter raisins on the nose that moves towards a wee bit of mustiness towards the end. Malty dry mouthfeel. Medium finish.

Earthy grassiness with a touch of caramel on the nose. A bit edgy on the palate with sweet asparagus notes. Medium to light finish.

Black Bull 12 Years Old, 50% abv
Rich almond grassy notes on the nose - in a very powerful in your face kind of way. Mouthfeel is surprising for 50% abv. It has a soft velvety texture with dominant spices, particulalrly ginger towards the end. The finish has an adgy bitterness to it. Not unpleasant mind you. Not surprising it has won so many awards. at 50%, it is in the heavyweight class for sure.

Johnnie Walker Double Black, 40% abv
Light soft smoke on the nose. Warm, smooth and rich mouthfeel, again with a light smoky taste. Sensation of sweet earthiness with a medium gentle finish.

Spices, grass, over-powering marinated marachino cherrie and candy apple on the nose. Sweet, supple, assertive with a touch of spice on the palate. Sweet finish.
