Urban Whisky

Urban Whisky, 40% abv

Light rum and raisin notes with undertones of solvent on the nose. Different for sure. There is almost a hint of bananas hiding in the background. An even layer of spices on the palate. Improving with age. (There is a piece of barrel stave in the bottle.)

Wiser's Small Batch

Wiser's Small Batch, 43.4% abv

Mixed nuts with a touch a very pleasant solvent notes on the nose. This dram is very well balanced. The mouthfeel reminds me of cinnamon on toast. It is pleassantly spicy, soft yet firm and finishes off with a spicy chocolate sensation. A GREAT sipping dram at an exceptional price - $30 in Ontario..

Canadian Club Sherry Cask

Canadian Club Sherry Cask, 41.3% abv

Deep nutty sherry notes greet the nose with hints of some sort of marzipan cake. The palate is treated to a light and airy sherry sensation. The finish is a bit unusual. It appears to fade quickly but then sherry notes return to make a statement.

This is finally coming along rather nicely. The nose is still light with a bit of a spiced edge to it. Very faint aromas of spicy fruitbegin to emerge. The palate is treated to rough edges but the core is starting to mellow with almond notes. Very pleasant. Not there yet but making progress. (This single malt was distilled on August 1, 2011 and an index finger size piece of oak stave was placed in the bottle. An experiment for sure.)

Canadian Club Classic 12 Years Old

Canadian Club Classic 12 Years Old, 40% abv

The second in a troica tasting of Canadian whiskies, this whisky is more full bodied that its lighter cousin (CC Premium) and manages to hold its promise until the final end,

Canadian Club Premium

Canadian Club Premium, 40% abv

Tonight I am tasting a troika of Canadian whiskies. To start with CC Premium, probably the most internationally known Canadian whisky. IT started off light and sparkling with great promise. Although it maintained its promise until near the end, the finish was bitter and mildly dissappointing.

Deep, rich, spicy and roasted nuts at the outset on the nose. A second nosing adds some dry grass undertones. Ginger, vanilla bean with swetness and spices on the palate. Lovely full and rich mouthfeel. Spices linger on the finish.

Hiram Walker Special Old Rye Whisky, 40% abv

Light ginger spices on the nose. Soft, mild solventy notes on the palate. Very delicate, simple, almost thin on the palate. Light gingery short finish. An apéritif sipping dram - no more.
